CURRICULUM

Curriculum

Since the National Curriculum was first introduced in 1998, it has undergone a number of changes. The most recent set of changes is known as Curriculum 2000. At our school we cover three Key Stages:

·        Foundation Stage- for children aged 3 to 5 years, in nursery and Reception classes.

·        Key Stage 1- for children aged 5-7 years, in Year 1 and 2 classes

·        Key Stage 2- for children aged 7-11 years, in Year 3 and 4 classes

Foundation Stage

At Nettlestone we provide a warm and welcoming environment for children starting at school. Good communication between families and school helps to ensure a smooth transition, but also enables the teacher to learn about each child from the adult that knows them best.  Information from pre-schools will also help to ensure continuity of experience in the Foundation Stage.

At this stage, young children are developing rapidly and the Foundation Stage hopes to maximise on this potential. Children vary greatly in their maturity in different areas of development and their learning and development will need to be carefully planned to take account of individual achievements and needs. Children may be engaged in some whole class activities, some individual learning opportunities, or playing co-operatively in small groups.

At Nettlestone we aim to nurture and build upon the natural energy, enthusiasm, curiosity and sense of humour of children. In the Foundation Stage, we offer a variety of play opportunities to include imaginative play, designing and constructing, investigating and exploring sand and water, creative activities and energetic play both inside and outside. Through these experiences children's language will be enriched and their understanding of the natural and built world will be extended; physical abilities and co-ordination will develop; and levels of concentration and persistence will be raised.

‘The teacher in the Reception class has a good understanding of how children of this age learn and he ensures that all activities  provided are carefully set up to match individual learning needs’ Ofsted  report January 2005

Key Stages 1 and 2

The school curriculum helps to develop enjoyment of, and commitment to, learning as a means of encouraging and stimulating the best possible progress and the highest attainment for all pupils. It builds on pupils' strengths, interests and experiences and develops their confidence in their capacity to learn and work independently and collaboratively. It equips them with the essential learning skills of literacy, numeracy, and information and communication technology, and helps to promote an enquiring mind and capacity to think rationally.

By providing rich and varied contexts for pupils to acquire, develop and apply a broad range of knowledge, understanding and skills, the curriculum  enables pupils to think creatively and critically, to solve problems and to make a difference for the better. It gives them the opportunity to become creative, innovative, enterprising and capable of leadership to equip them for their future lives as workers and citizens. It also helps to develop their physical skills and encourage them to recognise the importance of pursuing a healthy lifestyle and keeping themselves and others safe.

The school curriculum also promotes pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and, in particular, develops principles for distinguishing between right and wrong. It helps to develop their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of their own and different beliefs and cultures, and how these influence individuals and societies. The school curriculum should pass on enduring values, develop pupils' integrity and autonomy and help them to be responsible and caring citizens capable of contributing to the development of a just society. It should promote equal opportunities and enable pupils to challenge discrimination and stereotyping. It helps to develop their awareness and understanding of, and respect for, the environments in which they live, and secure their commitment to sustainable development at a personal, local, national and global level. The school curriculum promotes pupils' self-esteem and emotional well-being and helps them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others, at home, school, work and in the community.

‘Teaching and learning are good overall.’ Ofsted Report January 2005

At Key Stages 1 and 2 the same subjects are studied. These are;

o       Core subjects: English, Mathematics Science and Information and Communication Technology (I.C.T.),

o       Foundation subjects: Art and Design, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education (PE)

o       In addition all children must study religious education unless they have been withdrawn from lessons by their parents. Parents wishing to withdraw pupils from acts of worship and religious education are asked to contact the Headteacher.  A room is provided for Pupils who wish to follow through acts of worship other than that provided by the School.

·        Sex Education: It is our Policy to answer children’s questions regarding sex, both honestly and frankly while taking into consideration the level of maturity and understanding that the child has.  Children in Year 4 are shown the BBC television programme entitled “Sex Education”.  We have a VHS recording of the 3 programmes and are keen to loan it to parents prior to showing it to their children.  If you would like to borrow it, please contact the School Secretary.  The school’s Sex Education Policy is followed by all staff. As with all school policies, a copy is available for parents to see from the school secretary

Gifted and Talented Pupils

The School Curriculum is enhanced by very good provision for supporting and encouraging gifted and talented pupils. We work in partnership with other schools to offer a good range of projects in different subject areas to give children a chance to extend their skills. Projects are also planned by teachers to utilize individual specialist skills and interests.

The school has worked particularly well to provide for its gifted and talented pupils’ Ofsted report January 2005

Assessment

By the time children finish their Reception year in school their skills and knowledge will have been assessed to provide a Foundation Stage Profile.

National Curriculum Assessment at Nettlestone takes place in Year2. These tests are frequently referred to as SATs. Seven Year olds are assessed in reading, writing, number and science. The results are included in the end of year reports written to parents.

Ongoing assessments are carried out for writing, reading, spelling and mathematics in order to track pupil progress. Children who are not making satisfactory progress are identified, and given appropriate support (see SEN section)

Should you wish to question the delivery of National Curriculum we ask that the matter is discussed in the first instance with your child’s class teacher.

‘The school’s procedures to check and track pupils is very thorough’ Ofsted Report January 2005

School Profile

Each year the government requires the school to publish a profile of the school, which includes information on the standards that pupils have achieved at the end of Key Stage 1, and details our successes and areas that we are working to improve. There is also a link to the latest Ofsted report for the school. Nettlestone School profile may be reached by clicking on the link below:

BEHAVIOUR

Pastoral Care
We take our role of pastoral care very seriously. During the lunch hour we run drop in surgeries for children who have friendship issues that have arisen during playtime so that these may be dealt with promptly.
Nurture groups are run in order to raise children’s self esteem. Some children are invited to join ‘Smiley Face’ club to help to improve listening skills and co-ordination through games and activities. Our behaviour policy is designed to promote good behaviour through praise and reward.
Behaviour
School Rules

1. Do as adults tell you- first time
2. Keep hands and feet to yourself
3. Kind words only- one voice at a time
4. Everything in it’s place
5. Walk- do not run
Pupils are expected to follow these rules at all times during the school day.
(As part of the Citizenship and PHSE Curriculum pupils will be made aware of ‘Stranger Danger’)
Rewards
• Stamps will be given on the child’s behaviour card when it is observable that the rules are being kept.
• Each card will have an issue number.
• When a child has completed the card they will take it to the Headteacher.
• The child will then be given a Gold Headteacher’s award and a new behaviour card. A record will be kept by the Headteacher of the number of cards that the child has completed.
• When the child has received 5 Headteacher’s awards a red letter will be sent home to the parents. When the child has had 5 red letters they will receive a gold letter and a small gift. These awards are presented to children during our weekly Friday Celebration assembly, to which all parents are invited.
• Marbles will be given as class rewards, again when it is observable that the whole class are keeping a rule.
• Marbles will go into a jar, and when the jar is full the whole class will take part in a treat. This treat may be negotiated with the class, and may be a special event during school time.

Consequences

Sanctions will follow if a pupil chooses not to follow the rules.

1.       Time out – out of a group or out of the class

2.     Missed playtime

3.     Missed choosing time

4.     Letter to Parent/Carer

PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS

You are invited to attend meetings during the course of the school year to discuss your child’s targets and progress made towards these.

You will be given notice of these meetings to enable you to choose a suitable appointment time.  The appointment times will be available at the school office, and parents may either sign the list themselves or phone and ask the secretary to sign up a time for you.

Parents and children are invited to sign the current year’s ‘Home/School Agreement’ during the autumn meeting.  Should you wish to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher at any time during the year, please contact the class teacher to arrange this.  Your child’s teacher also arranges a meeting at the beginning of the Autumn school term to explain the nature of the work that your child will be involved with during the coming year. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Children with special needs are assisted according to their particular requirements.

Identification of special needs will from September 2002 be conducted through the use of “The Revised Code of Practice” This means that there have been some changes in SEN. The emphasis has changed from assessment to intervention. The school will provide a graduated approach of action and intervention.

Most children’s needs will be met through differentiation but some children will have Special Educational Needs. If the school feels that your child is not making ‘adequate progress’ they will be put at School Action.

School Action

  1. Parents are involved.

  2. Information is gathered.

  3. An Individual Education Plan is prepared. The Individual Education Plan is a partnership plan for you, your child and  the school.

  4. A review will take place (at least 2 per year)

  5. Your child may then be taken off / remain at SCHOOL ACTION / be moved to SCHOOL ACTION PLUS, depending on his/her progress; this decision is made with you!

School Action Plus

  1. The school will contact appropriate outside agencies

  2. Advice and/or assessment will take place.

  3. An IEP (Individual Education Plan) will be agreed with you.

  4. It will be reviewed at least twice per year.

  5. At the review your child may be taken off / put at School Action / kept at School Action Plus or, if adequate progress is not made, referred to be considered for a Statutory Assessment.

Statutory Assessment will take into account:-

Views of parents

Views of child

Views of school

Views of outside agencies

I.E.P.s

Evidence of progress over time

Match to set criteria

This information will be sent to the moderating panel who will then decide if a multi-agency assessment should take place. This may lead to a Statement of Educational Need

The school makes full use of the County Services in providing help for the full range of abilities that children display. Parents are asked to inform the school about any particular circumstances that may affect their child’s education. The class-teacher has responsibility for Special Needs Provision within the class. Mrs Pollington has particular responsibility as Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) The Schools’ special needs policy is followed by all staff. A copy of this policy can be obtained from the school secretary.

Music

A variety of musical experience is provided for the children throughout the school year.  The pupils in years 3  receive recorder tuition. We have also recently been awarded a ‘Wider Opportunities’ grant which will enable us to provide weekly lessons from a percussion teacher for all year 4 children, and a significant number of new tuned percussion instruments.  We are also able to provide a small number of children with violin tuition.  Violin tuition costs are met by the Parents.  Further details regarding this and other matters can be obtained from the Secretary.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS

Educational visits take place at various times of the year.  Parents are asked to contribute towards the cost of these visits.  These visits are dependent on sufficient funds being raised by voluntary parental contributions.  Visits have included trips to local shops, the beach, castles, industry, Sandown Zoo, museums and during previous years to the Kingswood Centre, Amazon World, The Science Museum, Middlebarn Farm and Branstone Farm.  Adequate supervision is provided for all outings.  Parents are given notice of future trips by the class teachers.

SUPERVISION

The children are supervised by a member of staff during playtimes and between 8.40a.m. and 8.50a.m. Please do not leave your child unsupervised by an adult before then.

During lunchtime the children are supervised by our Midday Supervisory Assistants (MSAs).

First-aid is administered by our qualified first-aiders.   If any pupil suffers from any form of injury that merits further action, we shall contact you.

SCHOOL MEALS

School meals are cooked on the premises.  The school works hard with the cook to ensure that meals meet current government guidelines and nutritional standards. School meals cost £1.55 daily.  Children are asked to bring the correct money for the week’s dinners in a named purse or envelope on the first day of the week.  Special Dinner envelopes are available for purchase from the school office. You may also pay half-termly for school dinners if you wish; details can be obtained from the school secretary. Late arrival of payment or incorrect amount does cause a lot of inconvenience! Packed lunches may be brought to school. The school provides seating and supervision for the children who bring packed lunches. Children are entitled to free school meals if their Parent’s income is below a certain level.  Contact the Secretary or the County Education Officer if you require further details.  Applications are confidential.

Each Friday 4 children are chosen as ‘diners of the week’ in recognition of their good behaviour at lunch time during the previous week. They invite a friend to join them on a special ‘diners of the week’ table, which has a tablecloth and special plates and cutlery for them to use. We also make an award for ‘healthy lunch box of the week’ at celebration assembly.

Playtimes

Our aim is to create a caring ethos in the playground, which is in line with our behaviour and anti-bullying policies. We have a selection of activities and resources available in the playground to help children to develop skills of co-operation and turn taking. Children are encouraged to take responsibility in the playground through a monitor system, which encourages children to look out for lonely children, take care of playground equipment and supervise children walking into school at the end of play.

The children run a tuck shop on Mondays and Fridays, which provides healthy snacks. Fresh fruit is also available for children daily at playtime.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

Neither the school or the L.E.A. can accept responsibility for personal belongings brought to or left at school.  All of the pupil’s belongings should be clearly labelled.

TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

Pupils coming from Ryde may take advantage of the bus provided by the school. A charge of £6 per school week per child will be made for all pupils requiring transport to and from Ryde to Nettlestone., and £3 per school week for children who join the bus in Seaview. This charge has had to be planned in the light of the continuing difficulties regarding funding made to schools. In the event of any pupil not being met by the designated adult at the agreed drop-off point, the pupil will be brought back to school via the coach and the cost of the journey billed to the pupil’s parent/guardian. Further details regarding pick-up points, times etc. are provided by the Reception class teacher prior to your child starting school. All other parents can obtain further details from the school secretary. At present the school uses the services of Diamond Cars.

All other parents can obtain further details from the school secretary and the Appendix A05 below.

FRIENDS OF NETTLESTONE SCHOOL

Friends of Nettlestone School

Our school has an active Friends’ Association which holds a number of social and fund-raising events throughout the year to improve the quality of provision for the pupils of Nettlestone Primary School.  All parents of children at Nettlestone School are automatically members.  Through the efforts of the Association we have been able to purchase a wide variety of audio and visual aids, library books, curtains, the adventure playground, new staging and books for the children who leave us at the end of their fifth year. At present the Friends are raising money to help us pay for an new I.C.T. suite which will be installed when the new classrooms are built later this year. Funds raised, also provide a Christmas Party with entertainment and presents for the children.  Many “new” parents find that involvement with Association activities an excellent way of making friends and becoming involved in the life of the school.

Link to the Friends Constitution page.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

A large number of parents assist the children by giving of their time and particular skills.  We would welcome your involvement.  Please  contact any member of the school’s staff to offer your services.  Presently we have Parental help with a wide variety of curriculum areas but we always need pairs of extra hands.  Parents are partners in the educational process so come forward and be involved.  Please note that the Government requires us to carry out CRB checks on any volunteer helpers.

  8. Should a pupil who normally uses the bus be absent due to illness for part of a week, then the full weekly charge is payable by parents for that week.
